Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading competition designed to promote the love and appreciation of reading to all elementary school fifth and sixth grade students. The aim of this program is to encourage students to read a variety of books and recall information about the plots, characters, and setting of the books.
Students form their own teams of three students to compete and test their knowledge in three exciting school competitions held at Sierra Verde, once in October, February, and April of the 2022-23 school year.
Families are welcome and encouraged to support our competing students throughout the program. Winning teams will move on to regional, district and inter-district-wide competitions. Team members are assigned 4 different books to read during each competition, for a total of 12 books. The top scoring team from each school will compete in the district finale in April. The top team that wins at the district level will go on to compete in the Regional battle with Chandler, Gilbert, Higley, Mesa, and Queen Creek/Combs districts in May 2023.
